Since the beginnings of music, it seems, there have been two main types of listeners: Those who consume what is put before them and those who actively pursue the music that suits their tastes.

The absolute distinction between these two types of people is kind of irrelevant because most people actually fall somewhere on the spectrum between the two poles. And, our position is far from static. Sometimes, like if we're sitting in a waiting room at the dentist or along for the ride in someone else's car, we're a captive audience and we have no choice. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the music we listen to when we're alone or when we're hanging out with friends. The concerts we attend. The sounds we pursue for personal enjoyment.

Music is communication. Bite sized, powerful, emotionally charged communication.

Reject performances and concerts that rely on autotuned vocals, synchronized background tracks, or any other sound that isn't being performed by artist on the stage in front of you.

Seek out writers and performers who create with authenticity and intention. Avoid music that "targets" you as an audience member based on somebody's marketing research.
